200,000 American Credit Card Accounts and 400,000 UK Customers
As I’ve mentioned time and again in my blogs and articles, massive data breaches are going to become more commonplace. The recent Equifax data breach is a perfect example of this.
More and more companies are global, so their customers are not limited to the specific country where they are headquartered. As it turns out at least 200,000 Americans and 400,000 UK customers are at risk.
According to Krebs on Security Equifax said that the, “data elements stolen included card account number, expiration date, and the cardholder’s name. Fraudsters can use this information to conduct e-commerce fraud at online merchants.” (https://krebsonsecurity.com/2017/09/equifax-hackers-stole-200k-credit-card-accounts-in-one-fell-swoop/)
So criminals can use that information to make purchases online. And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, Visa released an updated advisory saying, “it believes the records also included the cardholder’s Social Security number and address, suggesting that (ironically enough) the accounts were stolen from people who were signing up for credit monitoring services through Equifax.” (https://krebsonsecurity.com/2017/09/equifax-hackers-stole-200k-credit-card-accounts-in-one-fell-swoop/)
Now, we all know what a criminal can do with Social Security numbers: They can steal identities and create havoc for the person whose identity has been stolen. This brings me to the topic of cyber security.
In huge corporations like Equifax, IT departments typically have to have budgets approved for system patches. With criminals acting with lightning speed, by the time budgets are approved, it’s too late.
Cyber security must be the number one priority of any company small, medium and large. With the threat of breaches coming from every direction, it may be difficult to determine who is responsible when a breach occurs. Instead of trying to figure out who to blame, make sure your company keeps up with the most effective measures against any future cyber attacks. Call our offices for a free consultation.
